VIDEO: Are Driving Directions the New Reviews?

By April 21, 2015 March 3rd, 2022 4 Comments

Google holds patents and has written a number of papers on using driving directions as a ranking factor in Local. They may or may not use them as a ranking signal, although it is an intriguing thought.

Regardless, providing users a quick and ready way to improve user experience by sending them directly to Google Maps makes all kinds of sense. Learn why — and more importantly how — in this video recorded at our Local U Advanced in Seattle in June 2014.

Thanks for posting this Ed and great talk Mike!

Driving directions is something I have been placing on local sites for a bit now, mostly because I think it is incredibly effective for customers. I didnt really think of it as a ranking signal, more of a great user experience. Thanks for the insight!

And, from my POV, an even better way to measure whether a local site is “performing”.

        Thought of another question, Mike.

Would it make sense to place the Google Maps driving directions AND any personal driving directions the clients have on every page or would that be too much?

In the video you say to have G driving directions from Maps on each page. It could get wordy/lengthy/spammy?? if personal directions (drive past the Shell station and in front of the Big Ball of Yarn) is on each page in the sidebar.

        • Mike Blumenthal says:

What I do with google driving directions is to only provide a button link on each page that takes the user to Google Maps with the driving directions filled in as to destination leaving the visitor or Google to fill in the starting point. As a button it can be resized and repositioned so that in a mobile environment it is an obvious call to action.
