Hi there, does anyone have any insight into whether the new local pack ads may allow for a business to advertise outside of their immediate local area? For example, we have a client who is located in the Kendall area of Miami which is just outside of the Miami area they want to attract business from.

In fact, we have quite a few clients that might benefit from this, and I expect many of you would as well. Thoughts?

    Thank you!

Joy asked Google at the local training and he was unable by corporate dictum to say anything. So everything at this point is speculative other than the fact that it is coming.

the question is how will Google determine relevance and how will they evaluate quality….what will the radius be? these are totally unknown but it obviously creates an almost infinite amount of high value inventory for Google.

And the narrower the radius the more the increase in inventory but clearly there will be a point of diminishing returns for them so it will likely based on the industry density and market area.

I’m curious to see how this plays out as well. Yesterday I optimistically suggested that perhaps instead of trying to spam GMB, businesses that service people outside of their direct area and CPG companies looking for a maps footprint will be able to use these ads to promote their businesses.

If you saw my tweets yesterday I think that we can safely assume that it will largely be a revenue issue.

Google is maximizing free cash flow with all hands on deck to.fund their “next big thing”.

    It’s existential.

The farther away you get, the less likely the location extension will show. It’s also based on things like Quality Score and ad relevance. So if Google has 6 people to choose from, and 1 spot, they would probably pick the one that’s most relevant (actually in that city) with the better quality score/performing ads. I think it’s definitely possible to show in surrounding cities but not as likely if there are lots of good competitors who are actually in that city with great AdWords accounts.

Thank you all, and Joy, I completely agree that makes the most sense. Ah well, at least there will be an opportunity for our clients. Besides, Google will still likely rotate the result with other advertisers in the right conditions (e.g. daily budgets, higher bids, etc.)

I think it may in some ways work like this new experimental highly contextual ad format we saw yesterday where the listings were “nearby” and only showed if they were open.

I did this screen shot at 4:30 and got 3 listings but at 6:00 only one location was open. I haven’t yet determined how physically close these ad locations were to me. But I am betting not that far away

Very interesting Mike, thank you for sharing that. Here is mine from today with the Ad in the spot shown at SMX Adv… I am surprised I am seeing that here.

So in your example the add is in the Pack but the free pack is still 3 listings below it?

My example was search in a browser…where was yours from?

Here is a map that plots the area of the Local Pack vs the area of the Nearby Ads. Clearly, in the early days when there is little inventory, these hyper local ads will allow for greater local reach. But I would guess that over time the radius might end up like the Local Pack

My example was from conducting a search on my phone and then clicking Maps. Now I understand I got jumbled up because that form of ad has been around a while. Sorry for the misdirection.

Yeah the ad Ross is seeing is equivalent to seeing ads on Google Maps or the Local Finder, which have been around for awhile. What we have yet to see is an ad in the actual 3pack that occupies a previous “organic” space.

Will be interesting to see how long it is before the first one is spotted.

I’m still seeing this test on my phone and have yet to find anyone else who can see it: http://imprezziomarketing.com/google-testing-removing-call-buttons-3-pack-mobile/
