Google has around 4,000 different categories that small businesses can use in their Google Business Profile (GBP). Choosing the correct categories is very important because they have a massive impact on rankings. Many people are not aware of how often the list of categories changes. In December 2022, Google added these 3 categories.
- Heritage Railroad
- Memorial
- Piadina Restaurant
These did not exist before, so if you have a business in these categories, make sure you add them to your listing.
Google updated one category – Cue Sports School.
- Cue Sports School changed to Pool Academy
The only difference for this one is the name has changed – it is now called “Pool Academy.”
Google actually removed nine categories in the lodging/accommodation space.
- Budget Japanese Inn
- Cottage Village
- Group Accommodation
- Holiday Accommodation Service
- Holiday Park
- Homestay
- Japanese Inn
- Self-catering Accommodation
- Travellers Lodge
So, if you work in this space, you should take special note as you will no longer be able to use these as categories on your listing.
