LocalU Advanced takes a deep dive into the nuts and bolts of the bleeding edge of local search. Our next LocalU Advanced takes place the night of October 20th and all day on October 21st. To give you a sense of the topics we will be covering, we will be interviewing some of the speakers that will be there. David Deering, one of the foremost practitioners of Schema markup will be heading two sessions: Advanced Schema Markup for Local Businesses and a deep dive problem-solving session, Schema Q&A. If you want to learn the latest in Schema you owe it to yourself and your team to come.

In this first interview of our speaker series with myself, Mike Ramsey and David Deering of TouchPoint Digital, we discuss a number of recent developments, new Schema standards, updated Google rules and some in-depth Schema ideas as to how it benefits the local business.

This is a phenomenal discussion. A link to the guidelines being referred to would be a great addition to the text description of this video.

  • Joy Hawkins says:

If a dentist changes the Schema type from LocalBusiness to Dentist, would this impact their ranking? Has anyone ever tested the impact?

  • Mike Blumenthal says:

Google has said no. I have not tested it but it seems unlikely in and of itself to have much impact if my understanding is correct.

Relevance is a cumulative ranking factor. That we know. Relevance is a combined value made up of business name, category at Google, category elsewhere, review content at Google, review content elsewhere and other related content.

Even if the change contributed to the total relevance of a listing it would seem that its contribution would be small compared to the other things Google is looking at.

  • Gerry A Foster says:

Glurg. Am I going to need to go back and update schema on old reviews etc? Or are they “grandfathered” in?

    • Mike Blumenthal says:

@gerry grandfathered as in violating the new norms and not being penalized? I doubt that if that’s what you mean
